KONE ACQUIRES ELTEC OF VANCOUVER
KONE has acquired Eltec Elevator Ltd., of Vancouver, Canada. Eltec was founded by the late Manfred Godow in 1982 and built a strong reputation for high-quality service, modernization and repair work throughout the Vancouver metropolitan area. Eltec was active in the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA), hosting the 41st Annual CECA Convention in Vancouver in 2015. Welcoming Eltec employees, KONE observed the acquisition strengthens its local operations and brings additional talent and experience to its Vancouver-area team.
CAPTIVATE ELEVATOR SCREENS COMING TO TORONTO SKYSCRAPER
Captivate continues its Canadian expansion with a deal with Ivanhoé Cambridge and Hines to install 38 elevator screens in the CIBC Square office tower in downtown Toronto. Upon the tower's completion in 2020, Captivate's digital video screens will provide information and entertainment to CIBC tenants, including Microsoft and Boston Consulting Group. In a recent survey of property owners and managers, Captivate said 88% believe the screens enhance building communications, and 73% said they improve overall tenant experience. As for tenants, 82% said they had a more enjoyable elevator experience with the screens, and 78% said they would be disappointed if the screens were removed.
NEW ELEVATORS, ESCALATORS FOR BUSY PHILADELPHIA STATION
New elevators and escalators are coming to the 30th Street Station subway and trolley stop along Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s heavily traveled Market-Frankford Line in Philadelphia, NBC 10 reports. The new vertical-transportation equipment is part of US$38 million in improvements for the station being funded by a U.S. Department of Transportation grant, along with state, local and private funding. Aimed at improving accessibility, capacity and passenger flow, the upgrades also include an expanded mezzanine area, new lighting, additional bicycle parking, stairs and a ramp.
DUBAI RESIDENTIAL TOWER ON TRACK FOR 2019 HANDOVER
Imperial Avenue, a 28-story, 424-unit residential tower in downtown Dubai developed by SP International Property Developers, is on track for handover by December 2019, MEConstructionNews.com reports. With a curving, shimmery profile, the development includes five levels of parking, apartments ranging from one to five bedrooms, penthouses and podium-level villas. It is currently 40% complete. The developer is providing flexible payment plans, which it says has contributed to strong sales. “The property market in the U.A.E. is seeing early signs of resurgence, leading to renewed optimism,” SP Managing Director Cyrus Engineer said.
BROKEN ELEVATORS AMONG ISSUES ADDRESSED IN NYCHA PLAN
Strategies that address safety issues such as broken elevators in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings that are home to approximately 175,000 are part of NYCHA 2.0, a 10-year plan unveiled by Mayor Bill de Blasio to tackle some US$24 billion in needed repairs, Curbed New York reports. Lead paint, mold and heat issues will also be addressed. The authority will launch three programs: Build to Preserve, to build new developments on underutilized, publicly owned land and use the proceeds for additional public housing; Transfer to Preserve, to generate funds for repairs by selling air rights; and Fix to Preserve, which includes elevator repair.
